The Great American Triathlon is a no-swim triathlon on the American River Parkway, on the historic course of Eppie's Great Race: a 5.8-mile run downriver from William B. Pond Park in Carmichael to Sacramento State, a 12.5-mile ride from Sac State to the Sunrise Bridge in Fair Oaks, and a 6.1-mile paddle from the bridge to River Bend Park in Rancho Cordova.
Competitors race as Ironpersons doing all three legs, or as relay teams of two to four. The field is limited to 600 Ironperson competitors and 250 teams. The race is put on by Reach Your Potential, a Sacramento non-profit, with Innovations Health as its title sponsor. The sixth running was July 18, 2026; the seventh starts at 7:58 a.m. on July 17, 2027, and registration is open.
Proceeds go to local charities. In 2026 they were the American River Parkway Foundation, CASA of Placer County, and Community Against Sexual Harm.
